An overview of the basic steps we will be covering in the course to ease you in!

Step 1: The View
Scan the view around you and select what you would like to capture! There are many elements that can be incorporated into your drawing, so it is important to pick a view that you want to focus on!

Step 2: The Composition
Frame your composition – it helps to showcase the harmonic interaction between the different elements of nature and/or man-made architecture. This is a key step to achieving a good and balanced work!

Step 3: The Draft
Start light in your draft, as you keep your pen down to focus on your drawing before moving on to the foreground, and background. We would want to keep the focus to the work on the main subject. It is also during this stage that we will apply a one or two point perspective depending on your composition; but also take note of the rule that objects nearer to us are always bigger than those further away from us.

Step 4: The Techniques
Wrap up your final work by expressing and applying the different techniques that you will be taught during the bootcamp! Some ways we can go about doing this is through line work, colours and more. Some common mediums that we might use include pencil, pen, watercolour etc. Feel free to express the skyline in front of you with your preferences!

Why learn Urban Landscape Sketching? How to apply Urban Landscape Sketching?

Urban Landscape Sketching can be applied in everyday life in various ways:

  1. Documenting Your Surroundings: Use urban sketching as a means to document your city or neighbourhood. Simply take your sketchbook with you as you explore and capture the architecture, landmarks, parks, cafes, and other elements that make up the urban fabric of your area.
  2. Travel Sketching: Urban landscape sketching can be a wonderful way to document new experiences and create lasting memories. By sketching the streets, buildings, people, and local scenes that catch your eye, it allows you to observe and connect with the place on a deeper level. The work that you have created will also now be immortalised, much like a photograph.
  3. Commute Sketching: If you have a daily commute, whether by bus or train, use that time to sketch the scenes you encounter along the way. It could be the view from the window or interesting landmarks you pass by. It turns your commute into a creative and enjoyable activity and serves as a good way to de-stress too!
  4. Journaling and Reflection: Urban landscape sketching can be combined with journaling to create visual diaries of your experiences. Write about your thoughts, feelings, and observations alongside your landscape sketches to enhance the meaningfulness of your work.
