Portfolio Preparation Course DSA

Acrylic Still Life Painting

An Art Portfolio Preparation/Building Course for aspiring artists applying for SOTA/DSA

Looking for a portfolio preparation programme for your diploma/degree and above application? Head over to this link here to find out more!

One might think that building a portfolio is as simple as putting together a few doodles and artworks your kids have done over the years and submitting them to the schools of your choice. However, taking into consideration of the increasing standards of art schools and your child’s choice of specialisation, a simple collation of your art works simply will not suffice!

Preparing a portfolio for the school of your choice has a standardised set of requirements to be met. Not only that, it is the only platform and chance you get to impress the admission officers with your own sense of style, good art foundational skills as well as your own set of talents!

Drawing and Sketching Visual Arts Centre

Visual Arts Centre’s Approach

Every young artist has their own interests. With that into consideration, our professionally trained instructors will train your kid from the utmost basics of drawing and sketching to producing their own unique style of artworks over a period of time. Our goal is to help your kid build a good foundation and slowly – as time goes by, help them find their niche and cultivate their creativity.

We’ve collated admission information from some of the top local and global art schools and broken them down into 3 key criteria:

  1. Good Foundational Art Skills in Different Mediums
  2. A Diverse Range of Skills That Showcases Your Unique Style and Capabilities
  3. Clear Display of Logical Thinking and Development of Artwork

The building of a portfolio is broken into 2 parts:

Part 1: Training & Development of Professional Art Techniques and Observational Works

Part 2: Development of Artworks

Do note that in order to begin Part 2 of this portfolio preparation course, you have to first complete Part 1 with us!

Head on here to take a look at Part (1) of this portfolio preparation course. Alternatively, you may head here to look at the full 48 Session course instead.

Part 2: Development of Artworks

Part 2 of the Art Portfolio Preparation Course for DSA focuses more on the development of our students’ artworks. This second phase emphasizes creativity and helping our students find their artistic voice and sense of style, to enable them to stand out amongst other applicants.

Our professional instructors will help students to utilize the techniques learnt to create their own unique works of art. Our students will be encouraged to find out their various inspirations, and discover their areas of interest. They will also be aided in developing their thought processes behind making works, to help their works evolve to be more aligned with their own style and voice.

Acrylic Painting for Portfolio

In addition to the development of their artworks, students will also be coached in how to deal with interviews, and improve their presentation skills. Not only are these important for the DSA application process, they can also come in handy for students in other situations in the future.

How Does It Work?

Each student will be given a folder with guides, reference materials, rubrics made in reference to the criteria of top schools as well as our instructor’s professional feedback. On top of that, we will conduct an assessment after each learning stage. In between, there will also be regular consultations with our professional instructors to provide feedback on how to improve our students’ works. The given folder will be a good addition to the preparation to allow our students to track their progress and know where they are at during the preparation process.

Visual Arts Centre is motivated with the mission to get your child into their preferred art school. Over here, we adopt a unique and systematic approach that allows you to train your foundational art skills and develop your own sense of creativity. From foundational skills to how to ace those interviews, Visual Arts Centre has it all covered.

This course is available for registration for the full 48 Sessions, that focuses on both Part (1) and Part (2). Click here to find out more!

Basic Drawing Techniques: Start with the fundamentals of drawing, such as line work, shapes, and proportions. Provide step-by-step instructions on how to draw basic manga characters, focusing on simple shapes that can be built upon.
Character Design: Move on to character design concepts, including creating unique characters, designing their personalities, and developing backstories. Encourage participants to get creative and think outside the box.
Expression and Emotion: Teach how to convey emotions and expressions through facial expressions, body language, and positioning of characters. This can be a fun and interactive exercise where participants practice drawing various emotions.
Storytelling and Paneling: Explore the basics of storytelling in manga, including paneling techniques, pacing, and layout. Show examples of different panel structures and discuss how they affect the flow of the story.
Inking and Coloring: Introduce participants to inking techniques using pens or markers. You can also cover digital inking for those interested. Then, demonstrate basic coloring techniques using markers, colored pencils, or digital software.
Feedback and Collaboration: Provide opportunities for participants to share their work and receive feedback from their peers and instructors. Encourage collaboration by having them work together on short manga projects or collaborative drawings.
Final Showcase: End the workshop with a showcase of participants’ work. This could be in the form of an exhibition, digital gallery, or printed booklet. Celebrate everyone’s creativity and progress throughout the workshop.
Remember to create a supportive and encouraging environment where participants feel free to express themselves and explore their creativity. And don’t forget to have fun! Manga is all about imagination and passion, so let that spirit shine through in your workshop.

Academy Drawing Traditions

The academy drawing and sketching tradition, rooted in centuries of artistic practice, emphasizes disciplined study of form, proportion, and technique. Originating from Renaissance workshops and formalized by institutions like the Royal Academy, it prioritizes meticulous observation and mastery of fundamental skills. Students progress from basic exercises to complex compositions, learning to depict still life and common objects with precision and expression. This tradition values both classical principles and innovation, encouraging artists to push boundaries while maintaining a deep respect for tradition. Through rigorous training and critique, artists within this tradition cultivate a strong foundation for creative exploration and artistic excellence.
