Visual Arts Centre’s Approach

Every young artist has their own interests. With that into consideration, our professionally trained instructors will train your kid from the utmost basics of drawing and sketching to producing their own unique style of artworks over a period of time. Our goal is to help your kid build a good foundation and slowly – as time goes by, help them find their niche and cultivate their creativity through this art portfolio preparation course.

We broke down 3 key criteria we have collated from some of the top local and global art schools:

  1. Good Foundational Art Skills in Different Mediums
  2. A Diverse Range of Skills That Showcases Your Unique Style and Capabilities
  3. Clear Display of Logical Thinking and Development of Artwork

We’ve broken the painstaking journey of building a portfolio into two different parts:

Part 1: Foundational Art Techniques and 2D Works

Part 2: Development of Artworks

Part 1: Foundational Art Techniques and 2D Works

Part 1 of the Art Portfolio Preparation Course for DSA will focus on training and developing the student’s art foundation and techniques. These foundational skills are essential to creating a good portfolio as they serve as the base of every artist’s journey in the professional world. Specifically, students will be trained in:

    • Sketching and tonal drawing
    • Methods and techniques in creating realistic and observational works
    • Other art mediums such as watercolour and acrylic painting

Over the course of 24 sessions, we will emphasize on honing these techniques and thereafter, conduct an assessment after every technique has been taught. This enables us to track our students’ progress and ensure that we are able to identify their weaker areas and spend more time on improving them.

At Visual Arts Centre, we strive to train our students to be well-rounded. This helps them to be more versatile and able to meet the needs of their clients in the future. Or even for themselves, to achieve the most out of their creativity in their own artworks.

3D Model Work by our portfolio students

How Does It Work? Art Portfolio Preparation

Each student would be given a folder with guides, reference materials, feedback and rubrics made in reference from the criteria of the top schools as well as our our instructor’s professional feedback. On top of that we would conduct an assessment after each learning stage. This folder will be a good addition to the preparation to allow our student to track their progress and know where they are at during the preparation process.

Visual Arts Centre is motivated with the mission to get your child into their preferred art school. Over here, we adopt a unique and systematic approach that allows you to train your foundational art skills and develop your own sense of creativity. From foundational skills to how to ace those interviews, Visual Arts Centre has it all covered.

Storytelling and Paneling: Explore the basics of storytelling in manga, including paneling techniques, pacing, and layout. Show examples of different panel structures and discuss how they affect the flow of the story.
Inking and Coloring: Introduce participants to inking techniques using pens or markers. You can also cover digital inking for those interested. Then, demonstrate basic coloring techniques using markers, colored pencils, or digital software.
Feedback and Collaboration: Provide opportunities for participants to share their work and receive feedback from their peers and instructors. Encourage collaboration by having them work together on short manga projects or collaborative drawings.
Final Showcase: End the workshop with a showcase of participants’ work. This could be in the form of an exhibition, digital gallery, or printed booklet. Celebrate everyone’s creativity and progress throughout the workshop.
Remember to create a supportive and encouraging environment where participants feel free to express themselves and explore their creativity. And don’t forget to have fun! Manga is all about imagination and passion, so let that spirit shine through in your workshop.

Academy Drawing Traditions

The academy drawing and sketching tradition, rooted in centuries of artistic practice, emphasizes disciplined study of form, proportion, and technique. Originating from Renaissance workshops and formalized by institutions like the Royal Academy, it prioritizes meticulous observation and mastery of fundamental skills. Students progress from basic exercises to complex compositions, learning to depict still life and common objects with precision and expression. This tradition values both classical principles and innovation, encouraging artists to push boundaries while maintaining a deep respect for tradition. Through rigorous training and critique, artists within this tradition cultivate a strong foundation for creative exploration and artistic excellence.
