Beckoning of the Breeze 《唤风》 啸涛扇面小品展

Overview

The name of the exhibition — Beckoning of the Breeze, is derived from the poem “Summer” by famous poet, Li Shang Ying, of Tang Dynasty. In his poem, he mentioned how the elegant movement of the fan brought on the winds, which inspired us to name our upcoming exhibition – Beckoning of the Breeze. In ancient times, scholars and educated people would treasure and appreciate fan paintings. There were even gatherings (雅集 in Chinese), where friends shared, admired and discussed the fans they had collected.

Fan paintings are an important aspect of Chinese ink painting but is not widely recognised in today’s world. Historically, fan painting dates back several millenniums. There was a famous story about renowned Master Calligrapher Wang Xi Zhi with regards to fan painting. Wang was taking a stroll by the market whereby he saw an old lady selling fans. Business was poor, and Wang volunteered his services to help the old lady. He wrote on the fans but the old lady was unhappy as she felt that Wang had damaged her fans by scribbling on them. Wang said: “Old madam, do not worry, for you can sell the scribbled fans at a higher price!” The old lady was puzzled but she tried selling it regardless. Soon after, someone recognized that the fans were written by Wang. When the news spread, the fans were sold out quickly.

By painting and writing on the physical fan, it brings artistic value and injects life into a normal everyday object.

A physical fan has paintings and writings both at the front and back, which makes it more challenging to create than a normal two dimensional artwork.  In fact it can be considered a three dimensional artwork, especially the folded fan version. The physical fan is also favoured by art collectors and connoisseurs as it is extremely portable.

Hence, it is with great pleasure that Siaw-Tao Chinese Seal Carving, Calligraphy and Painting Society shares this knowledge of Chinese Fan Ink Paintings. In conjunction with the exhibition, a series of events has been organised for further appreciation of Chinese Fan Ink Painting.

Exhibition Details

In this upcoming exhibition, over 40 Siaw-Tao artists will be presenting close to 90 pieces of fan-shaped works. They consist of genres ranging from Birds and Flowers, Animals, Landscape, Abstract, Calligraphy and many others. These paintings are done on fan shaped paper as well as the actual physical fan.

Conducted by Toh Chee Hao and Lee Soon Heng. Participants will be taught how to compose and execute their very own fan paintings, learning the peonies and goldfish subject.

Panel Discussion on Fan Painting Appreciation (in Mandarin)

Facilitated by Dr Yew Tong Wei.

Panelists include 2016 Cultural Medallion Winner, Mr Koh Mun Hong and art connoisseur, Ms. Chow Yian Ping.

怀袖雅物·唤风抒怀《“唤风”啸涛扇面书画展》

本地啸涛书画篆刻会将于5月4日至8日举办第三届年度“小品”展。与前两届不同的是，今年42位啸涛会员以“扇面”作品形式呈现90件书画小品。展览题为“唤风”，语出唐代李商隐诗《燕台诗·夏》：“绫扇唤风阊阖天，轻帷翠幕波洄旋。”参展书画家包括：李福茂、陈建坡、傅美珠、许梦丰、曾纪策、赖瑞龙、郑木彰、胡财和、黄淑华、陈晓薇等。

展出的扇面内容包括：以各书体呈现诗词名句的书作，以及具有传统或现代画风的画作。画作以工笔、写意或抽象画法，描绘山水、花鸟、动物、风景等题材。展出作品供出售。

配合此展览，啸涛也将举办一场以“扇面”为主题的书画工作坊以及座谈会，旨在让公众认识及欣赏“扇文化”。啸涛资深会员将在书画工作坊上现场指导公众如何在扇面上书写和绘画。座谈会嘉宾将在现场畅谈扇面历史与文化、创作与制作过程等课题。详情如下：

扇面的文化底蕴深厚。中国历代书画家喜欢在扇面上书写或绘画以抒情达意，可供收藏或赠友人。扇面含书画、扇骨经雕琢，因此向来受文人雅士宠爱。扇子携带方便，出入怀袖，故有“怀袖雅物”的别号。形式上，存有字或画的扇子，保持原样的叫“成扇”，其中包括了折扇和团扇；便于装裱入框的则俗称“扇面”。此次展出的作品就包括了成扇与扇面，形式多样，将让人耳目一新。

World of Manga [Foundation & Styling]

A manga art workshop for children and teenagers sounds like a fantastic idea! Here’s how you might structure it:
Introduction to Manga: Begin by introducing what manga is, its history, and its influence on popular culture worldwide. Show examples of different manga styles and genres to give participants an overview.
Basic Drawing Techniques: Start with the fundamentals of drawing, such as line work, shapes, and proportions. Provide step-by-step instructions on how to draw basic manga characters, focusing on simple shapes that can be built upon.
Character Design: Move on to character design concepts, including creating unique characters, designing their personalities, and developing backstories. Encourage participants to get creative and think outside the box.
Expression and Emotion: Teach how to convey emotions and expressions through facial expressions, body language, and positioning of characters. This can be a fun and interactive exercise where participants practice drawing various emotions.

Academy Drawing Traditions

Originating from Renaissance workshops and formalized by institutions like the Royal Academy, it prioritizes meticulous observation and mastery of fundamental skills. Chinese Ink Painting and Calligraphy

This course on Chinese ink painting and calligraphy introduces young learners to the rich traditions of Chinese art. Through hands-on activities, students explore the basics of brush techniques, ink control, and the delicate art of Chinese script. They learn to appreciate the cultural significance of calligraphy and painting, developing skills in creating elegant strokes and expressive brushwork. Funk with Graffiti

Funk With Graffiti Workshop for children is an engaging and creative program aimed at introducing young artists to the vibrant world of graffiti and funk-inspired street style art. Participants learn the basics of graffiti history, techniques, and safety. Guided by professional graffiti artists, children explore the art of designing their unique tags, emphasizing creativity, expression, and individuality. The workshop includes hands-on activities, from sketching concepts to creating final designs with spray paint on provided surfaces. By the end of the session, children gain confidence in their artistic abilities and an appreciation for graffiti and funk as legitimate forms of street art. Each child completes two original artworks, which they proudly take home, showcasing their newfound skills and personal style.

Batik Tales

In the Batik Introduction Handkerchief Painting workshop, participants will learn the traditional art of batik, a wax-resist dyeing technique originating from Indonesia. The workshop begins with a brief history and overview of batik, highlighting its cultural significance and various techniques. Participants will then observe a demonstration of applying wax with tjanting tools and dyeing the fabric. Following the demonstration, each participant will design and create their own batik handkerchief, applying wax to create patterns and then dyeing their fabric. The workshop concludes with a group discussion, allowing participants to share their creations and reflect on their learning experience.
