Created under SMRT’s Comic Connect Programme, the funky mural that you see features various iconic landmarks from all around Somerset station from the past to present! See if you will be able to identify any of them:
1. Mandarin Orchard Hotel (recently renamed as Hilton Singapore Orchard)
2. Killiney Road
3. Sian Teck Tng Temple
4. Cuppage Terrace
5. Former Singapore Chinese Girls’ School (yes, the one right by Emerald Hill!)
6. Emerald Hill
7. The Heeren
8. Youth Park
Little did we know that most of these landmarks have a story behind them.
For instance, the Killiney Road is home to one of the oldest Hainanese coffeeshop in SIngapore to Emerald Hill being a well-known housing locale amongst the local Peranakan community during the early 1900s.
While the Mandarin Orchard Hotel (now known as Hilton Singapore Orchard) was once home to Singapore’s first ever revolving rooftop restaurant!
The Comic Connect programme by SMRT is a way of engaging the local art community to install both heritage and comic-themed murals in islandwide MRT stations managed by SMRT. Created by visual artists Anthony Chong, Marianne Tan, Rene Foo and Sarah Kaydence, the mural’s colour and style on the other hand, was very much influenced and inspired by the Youth Park. The entire mural took a total of four weeks for fruition – from research all the way to final production.
Art Curator & Director of Visual Arts Centre Iola Liu shared that, “Many of the artists dabble in graffiti and urban arts, and the skatepark is their hangout spot. They believe the mural’s youthful and vibrant colours are aligned to the identity of Somerset.”.
Want to have a closer look at this new funky life size mural? It can be easily located right by the walkway of Somerset station Exit C.
