The theme of this year’s art competition is “Embracing Nature” and we were able to witness talented children and teenagers apply their creativity and art techniques to create beautiful artworks that reflect their artistic interpretation of nature and inspire others to embrace nature.

 

It is not an easy task to visualise and draw from a complete blank paper and complete it in 90 minutes without any help. Children and teenage participants in this art competition presented complete works of high artistic quality and creativity.

Visual Arts Centre and Affordable Art Fair 2023 Organizing Committee will jointly organize the < Embracing Nature> Children and Teenagers Art Competition from 10th November to 12th November 2023, during the exhibition period of Affordable Art Fair Singapore 2023.

This shall be a creative art competition conducted “live”, where participants are provided with a theme and some references and provided with 90minutes to create their own artwork. The theme – “Embracing Nature”, and students may explore and freely interpret this theme to create a drawing, painting or mixed medium 2D piece of artwork with the art materials provided. Engaging their creative thinking skills and putting their drawing and painting skills to the test! 

During this competition within Affordable Art Fair Singapore 2023, students are provided with a standard A4 paper size, drawing materials and markers – pencils, pen liners, coloured markers; watercolour painting materials; acrylic painting materials. 

Registered participants for the art competition will be seated at the Visual Arts Centre Art Studio Area during Affordable Art Fair Singapore 2023 to join and participate in the art competition under professional teacher guidance!

<EMBRACING NATURE> ART COMPETITION ON 10-12 NOV DURING AFFORDABLE ART FAIR SINGAPORE 2023 details and rules:

Theme: Embracing nature

Competition format:
Improvise on the spot and complete the participating paintings within the designated time (90 minutes)

Briefing before art competition: 10 minutes

Professional art teachers from the Singapore Visual Arts Centre will provide competition reminders and guidance on-site, and will also provide some reference pictures. Despite this, participating students still need to have their own original ideas and be able to independently complete composition, painting and finally submit a complete work.

9-12 years old

10 Nov 4.15pm-5.45pm

11 Nov 11.30am-1pm, 2pm-3.30pm

13-18 years old

11 Nov 4pm-5.30pm

12 Nov 11.15am-12.45pm, 1pm-2.30pm

The duration of each competition session is 90 minutes.

Drawing materials:

All painting materials used in the competition are provided by the Singapore Visual Arts Centre.

The panel of judges:

Professional art teachers at Singapore Visual Arts Centre and Organizing Committee Members of Affordable Art Fair 2023.

Prizes:

The panel of judges shall judge the works of the top three contestants for each age category. The selected top three contestants of each group shall receive 1 session of professional art course at Visual Art Centre and a set of acrylic painting materials (a canvas, a set of acrylic paints and a set of brushes).

The top three works of each group will enter the grand finals. And finally, the first, second, and third prize winner of the grand final will be selected.

First Prize:
8 sessions of professional art course worth $498 at Singapore Visual Art Centre and an acrylic painting material package (a canvas, a set of acrylic paints, a set of brushes and marker pens, sketchbook) worth $100.

Second Prize:
4 sessions of professional art course worth $268 at Singapore Visual Art Centre and an acrylic painting material package (a canvas, a set of acrylic paints and a set of brushes) worth $68.

Third Prize:
2 sessions of professional art course worth $130 at Singapore Visual Art Centre and an acrylic painting material package (a canvas, a set of acrylic paints and a set of brushes) worth $68.

FAQ

Participants must fall into one of two age categories: Children Group (9-12 years old) or Youth Group (13-18 years old).
The competition age will be calculated based on the birth year of the contestant.
The birth year of the Children Group should be (2011-2014)
The birth year of the Youth Group should be (2005-2010)

The competition is conducted “live” with a 90-minute duration. Participants are given a theme, “Embracing Nature,” and are provided with materials to create a drawing, painting, or mixed medium 2D artwork.

No, all painting materials required for the competition are provided by the Singapore Visual Arts Centre.

The top three contestants in each age category will receive a session of professional art course at Visual Art Centre and a set of acrylic painting materials. Yes, there is a registration fee of $35. Parents are welcome to sign up their children to showcase their painting talents at the Affordable Art Fair 2023.

2021: National Children and Youth Art Competition – COurage, Hope and Love in the time of a pandemic

Singapore Art Competition for children and youths - national kids art competition - Courage, Hope and Love in the time of a pandemic

Visual Arts Centre has conducted a national-level art competition for children and youth in 2021, titled Courage, Hope and Love in the time of a pandemic. Over 300 courageous children and youth from the age of 7 to 18 has participated in this competition, showcasing a myriad of inspiring works that portrays their experiences and wishes for the people, both strangers and loved ones during this difficult time of the pandemic.

Top 3 and 30 Artistic Excellence Awards were given out to both the Children and Youth categories, with 66 prize recipients’ works being exhibited at Visual Arts Centre at the end of the competition. World of Manga [Foundation & Styling]

A manga art workshop for children and teenagers sounds like a fantastic idea! Here’s how you might structure it:
Introduction to Manga: Begin by introducing what manga is, its history, and its influence on popular culture worldwide. Show examples of different manga styles and genres to give participants an overview.
Basic Drawing Techniques: Start with the fundamentals of drawing, such as line work, shapes, and proportions. Provide step-by-step instructions on how to draw basic manga characters, focusing on simple shapes that can be built upon.
Character Design: Move on to character design concepts, including creating unique characters, designing their personalities, and developing backstories. Encourage participants to get creative and think outside the box.
Expression and Emotion: Teach how to convey emotions and expressions through facial expressions, body language, and positioning of characters. This can be a fun and interactive exercise where participants practice drawing various emotions.

Academy Drawing Traditions

The academy drawing and sketching tradition, rooted in centuries of artistic practice, emphasizes disciplined study of form, proportion, and technique. Originating from Renaissance workshops and formalized by institutions like the Royal Academy, it prioritizes meticulous observation and mastery of fundamental skills. Students progress from basic exercises to complex compositions, learning to depict still life and common objects with precision and expression. This tradition values both classical principles and innovation, encouraging artists to push boundaries while maintaining a deep respect for tradition. Through rigorous training and critique, artists within this tradition cultivate a strong foundation for creative exploration and artistic excellence.

Chinese Ink Painting and Calligraphy

This course on Chinese ink painting and calligraphy introduces young learners to the rich traditions of Chinese art. Through hands-on activities, students explore the basics of brush techniques, ink control, and the delicate art of Chinese script. They learn to appreciate the cultural significance of calligraphy and painting, developing skills in creating elegant strokes and expressive brushwork. The course fosters creativity, patience, and fine motor skills, while also providing insights into Chinese history and aesthetics. By the end, children gain confidence in their artistic abilities and a deeper understanding of Chinese cultural heritage.

Funk with Graffiti

Funk With Graffiti Workshop for children is an engaging and creative program aimed at introducing young artists to the vibrant world of graffiti and funk-inspired street style art. Participants learn the basics of graffiti history, techniques, and safety. Guided by professional graffiti artists, children explore the art of designing their unique tags, emphasizing creativity, expression, and individuality. The workshop includes hands-on activities, from sketching concepts to creating final designs with spray paint on provided surfaces. By the end of the session, children gain confidence in their artistic abilities and an appreciation for graffiti and funk as legitimate forms of street art. Each child completes two original artworks, which they proudly take home, showcasing their newfound skills and personal style.

Batik Tales

In the Batik Introduction Handkerchief Painting workshop, participants will learn the traditional art of batik, a wax-resist dyeing technique originating from Indonesia. The workshop begins with a brief history and overview of batik, highlighting its cultural significance and various techniques. Participants will then observe a demonstration of applying wax with tjanting tools and dyeing the fabric. Following the demonstration, each participant will design and create their own batik handkerchief, applying wax to create patterns and then dyeing their fabric. The workshop concludes with a group discussion, allowing participants to share their creations and reflect on their learning experience.
