Synopsis
Samar Roy
b. 2001
Emerging artist Samar Roy’s colourful artworks explore how contemporary abstract expressionism can function beyond context.
His works evoke a playful and dreamlike setting through which the existential and escapist nature behind his work may be presented, and Roy’s overarching personal philosophy to not take life too seriously is highlighted.
This abstract retrospective is titled: ‘Abstract Inferno’, with the featured work entitled ‘Abstract Inferno red’. This retrospective features several of Roy’s signature collections such as; Reflection in Nature, Meadow of Colours and Playhouse. “This collection is inspired by a book written by Steven Pressfield titled the War of art, the resistance an artist might feel in creating, and how the process is the most important element of an artists work to them. How an artist is compelled to create, and that through a series of creations is able to develop a dialogue and language with their own works. Expressionism and specifically abstract contemporary expressionism has always fascinated me. When an artist is so sure of their intention they need not think of form but instead focus on their conscious and subconscious to create without any preconceived message but their own need and compulsion to create a work that is filling their visions with vivid imagery.
Through a series of unadulterated and raw creations an artist may look upon their work as it were a mirror.”
Roy was born in India, and raised in Singapore where he first began his career in art with a solo exhibition at REDSea Gallery titled ‘The first edition’. He received his BA at the Istituto Marangoni in Paris, he continues to work from his studios in India and Paris, selling and exhibiting globally, and represented by MINT Gallery.

In the Batik Introduction Handkerchief Painting workshop, participants will learn the traditional art of batik, a wax-resist dyeing technique originating from Indonesia. The workshop begins with a brief history and overview of batik, highlighting its cultural significance and various techniques. Participants will then observe a demonstration of applying wax with tjanting tools and dyeing the fabric. Following the demonstration, each participant will design and create their own batik handkerchief, applying wax to create patterns and then dyeing their fabric. The workshop concludes with a group discussion, allowing participants to share their creations and reflect on their learning experience.
