The Rembrandt Project Oil Painting Workshop

Conducted by artist Michael Britton, a professional oil painter,  the Rembrandt Project Oil Painting Workshop is a 3 days, 18 hours long intensive portrait oil painting bootcamp and will be an in-depth masterclass workshop on oil painting. Through the workshop, you will learn the classical oil painting technique of Alla Prima (wet on wet) – a technique utilized by master artists like Rembrandt through referencing the Self-Portrait of Rembrandt and be taken through the journey of creating an oil painting to the likes of the 17th century master artist Rembrandt himself!

Suitable for beginners to advanced learners in portrait oil painting, take this opportunity to attend this masterclass portraiture oil painting workshop with Britton, where students will be guided step-by-step with live demonstration on colour theory, light and shadow, brush and painting techniques by the master artist, which is an especially important experience and knowledge for learners. Learn and effectively capture the likeness of your subjects in the way of a master painter Britton, and also be taken through the entire creative process encapsulating the fundamental truths of painting: drawing, painting, design, value, colour, edges, paint manipulation, contrast and, above all, unity. The Rembrandt Project Oil Painting Workshop aims to teach and guide learners to gain a firm understanding of the alla prima technique in application to a portrait painting through the intensive and comprehensive three days programmme. Learners will gain plenty of useful knowledge and experience and be able to apply these techniques in their future practise, learning to paint anyone!

Cost: $1380 with art materials provided (optional $60 additional for specialized art materials to take home)

As artists capture moments in time, a portrait can carry meaning and emotion like nothing else. Portraiture in art can be a daunting venture, however with guidance from an experienced artist, you can take the steps to further your art skills, at the same time create something meaningful to you.

About Michael Britton

Michael Britton is a New York City trained artist (New York Academy of Art) and a master artist. He has taught several thousand artists, some of whom have gone on to full-time art careers as painters and teachers, throughout his several decades long career. Britton was the Artistic Director of the Vancouver Academy of Art, Canada for six years and has also taught drawing for Walt Disney Studios. Not only is he an artist, he is also the author of several art-training videos including Painting Clara Serena. 

Michael Britton will be instructing for The Rembrandt Project Oil Painting Workshop in person at Visual Arts Centre – MacPherson Gallery & Studio on 10 – 12 February 2023, 1pm-7pm daily.

World of Manga [Foundation & Styling]

A manga art workshop for children and teenagers sounds like a fantastic idea! Here’s how you might structure it:
Introduction to Manga: Begin by introducing what manga is, its history, and its influence on popular culture worldwide. Show examples of different manga styles and genres to give participants an overview.
Basic Drawing Techniques: Start with the fundamentals of drawing, such as line work, shapes, and proportions. Provide step-by-step instructions on how to draw basic manga characters, focusing on simple shapes that can be built upon.
Character Design: Move on to character design concepts, including creating unique characters, designing their personalities, and developing backstories. Encourage participants to get creative and think outside the box.

Funk with Graffiti

Funk With Graffiti Workshop for children is an engaging and creative program aimed at introducing young artists to the vibrant world of graffiti and funk-inspired street style art. Participants learn the basics of graffiti history, techniques, and safety. Guided by professional graffiti artists, children explore the art of designing their unique tags, emphasizing creativity, expression, and individuality. The workshop includes hands-on activities, from sketching concepts to creating final designs with spray paint on provided surfaces. By the end of the session, children gain confidence in their artistic abilities and an appreciation for graffiti and funk as legitimate forms of street art. Each child completes two original artworks, which they proudly take home, showcasing their newfound skills and personal style.

Batik Tales

In the Batik Introduction Handkerchief Painting workshop, participants will learn the traditional art of batik, a wax-resist dyeing technique originating from Indonesia. The workshop begins with a brief history and overview of batik, highlighting its cultural significance and various techniques. Participants will then observe a demonstration of applying wax with tjanting tools and dyeing the fabric. Following the demonstration, each participant will design and create their own batik handkerchief, applying wax to create patterns and then dyeing their fabric. The workshop concludes with a group discussion, allowing participants to share their creations and reflect on their learning experience.
