But first, here is a brief introduction to the world of batik:
You do not use pen and paper for batik. Instead, you use cloth instead of paper, and wax instead of ink. When beginning a piece of batik work, you would draw a sketch using pencils of the design desired. Like all artworks, the sketching part is important in Batik Painting as it provides guidelines and composition before you apply batik dyes. Be as creative as possible with your designs, they are all an expression of your own for your Batik Painting. Then, you would use a wax funnel – a tjanting, filled with hot melted wax, to trace over the patterns on the cloth. This type of batik art is known as batik tulis – which means writing, completely using wax by hand with the tjanting tool. From this batik tjanting method, you can see the changes in the variation in size and shapes of the wax flowing.
Originated from Java, Indonesia, Batik is an ancient traditional art form cherished across Asia. This unique craft involves a wax-resist dyeing technique, where hot wax is applied to fabric using a ‘canting’ tool. The wax blocks the dye from reaching the fabric, allowing for intricate patterns and designs to emerge. Once the desired design is complete, the fabric is submerged in boiling water or heated with an iron to remove the wax, unveiling the vibrant colours underneath. Batik has evolved into a deeply rooted cultural symbol and a beloved form of artistic expression throughout Asia.
This batik workshop requires no formal knowledge or background in art, we ask only for your passion and interest in the subject. Batik painting is a unique heritage of Southeast Asia and produces wonderful results. Not only is Batik easy to learn, but anyone can use the technique to produce beautiful pieces of art.
Not to mention, during our batik workshop, you will be introduced to batik techniques by our professionally trained batik teachers. Our batik instructor will demonstrate how to use the wax before guiding the students individually to avoid confusion. Furthermore, you’ll receive step by step guidance from the teachers to create the batik piece you envisioned.
As students wait for their wax to cool off and harden, our instructors will introduce the colour theory and provide a live demonstration on using Batik Paints/Dyes. It is important to know colour theories when it comes to Batik Painting, especially if you want to achieve colours that are not provided. Blending Batik dyes will be taught by the instructors before you apply your skills to the fabric cloth using brushes or droppers.
