Rooted in the visual language of 1950s tape technology, the ▶︎ icon symbolises motion, activation, and the act of pressing “play.” Its off-kilter form subtly shapes an ‘A’, moving and balancing as it plays — a visual metaphor for experimentation, risk-taking, and the dynamic nature of artistic inquiry. ▶︎EDGE Playground draws from this symbolism to position art education as an ongoing process of testing, questioning, and becoming — of playing with ideas, materials, and ways of seeing.
Curated by Deborah Lim — whose curatorial practice includes major exhibitions such as Iris van Herpen: Sculpting the Senses at ArtScience Museum — the exhibition is conceived as a living, participatory space rather than a static display of outcomes. ▶︎EDGE Playground foregrounds the often unseen layers of thinking, making, and reflection that underpin meaningful art practice. Here, play is understood not as a preliminary stage, but as a rigorous mode of inquiry that enables educators to explore ideas with curiosity, openness, and intention.
Under the guidance of artist-mentors Genevieve Leong, Isabella Ong, and Daniel Chong, participating educators engage in art-making through play, embracing experimentation, material exploration, and dialogue. The exhibition brings together works, process documentation, and reflective traces from teacher-artists, revealing how artistic identities are shaped and reshaped through practice.
Visitors will encounter fragments, trials, questions, and moments of pause — invitations into the rhythms of the artists’ creative journeys. ▶︎EDGE Playground celebrates authentic artistic inquiry, where art education and artistic practice intersect, and invites audiences to reconsider what it means to learn, teach, and make through play.

In the Batik Introduction Handkerchief Painting workshop, participants will learn the traditional art of batik, a wax-resist dyeing technique originating from Indonesia. The workshop begins with a brief history and overview of batik, highlighting its cultural significance and various techniques. Participants will then observe a demonstration of applying wax with tjanting tools and dyeing the fabric. Following the demonstration, each participant will design and create their own batik handkerchief, applying wax to create patterns and then dyeing their fabric. The workshop concludes with a group discussion, allowing participants to share their creations and reflect on their learning experience.
