Yeo Hoe Koon Artist Biography & Artworks Collection
Yeo Hoe Koon was born in 1935 in Hainan, China, and later settled in Singapore. He quickly gained recognition as one of Singapore’s pioneering second-generation artists. After graduating from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA), he continued his studies at the prestigious École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. There, he immersed himself in the dynamic world of European modernism.
This cross-cultural journey shaped his unique artistic voice. His works combine Eastern and Western influences with sensitivity and confidence. Over the years, his art has appeared in major exhibitions in Singapore and abroad. Collectors and critics respect him as a master who has helped define Singapore’s modern art landscape.

Yeo Hoe Koon is known for lyrical abstraction, expressive brushwork, and the poetic interplay of colour and light. In particular, his expertise in oil, acrylic, and Chinese ink allows him to create emotionally rich and visually rhythmic paintings that break cultural and stylistic barriers.
While his early works reflect classical techniques, his later pieces show bold abstraction. They radiate freedom and spontaneity that mark his maturity as an artist. Moreover, he often explores natural elements such as wind, mist, water, and light, giving his paintings energy and vitality.
Yeo merges the traditions of Chinese ink with the dynamic energy of Western abstraction. Therefore, his art feels both timeless and modern.

Yeo has showcased his works in numerous solo and group exhibitions. A major retrospective at NAFA in 2022, titled Illumination, presented over 30 new oil paintings, including a four-metre-long triptych. This event celebrated his lifelong dedication to the arts and highlighted the freshness that defines his current style.
Additionally, his exhibitions stand out for vibrancy, depth, and contemplative qualities. Each canvas opens a window to his inner world and evolving artistic journey.

In the Batik Introduction Handkerchief Painting workshop, participants will learn the traditional art of batik, a wax-resist dyeing technique originating from Indonesia. The workshop begins with a brief history and overview of batik, highlighting its cultural significance and various techniques. Participants will then observe a demonstration of applying wax with tjanting tools and dyeing the fabric. Following the demonstration, each participant will design and create their own batik handkerchief, applying wax to create patterns and then dyeing their fabric. The workshop concludes with a group discussion, allowing participants to share their creations and reflect on their learning experience.
