1. SOTA (School Of The Arts)

1.1 About SOTA (School Of The Arts)

SOTA is another option for the next step after primary school. The system for SOTA is different from the regular 4-5 year programme in secondary schools, following their own 6 year integrated curriculum. Students progress from year 1 through year 6 without needing to reapply at JC level. SOTA students will graduate with either the IB Diploma or the IB career-related IB subject in year 5-6, with visual arts as a higher level IB subject.

Unlike the usual secondary school art programmes, SOTA students are allowed daily studio access, with dedicated art studios, printmaking labs, ceramics studios, and digital media suites available beyond classroom hours for students to use for their creative projects. 

SOTA allows students to experience artist mentorship. Getting to work under working artists regularly as mentors and guest lecturers. Students go through the exhibition culture and experience building professional relationships and practices early on in their art education. With the multitude of mediums, students are equipped with the exposure to interdisciplinary arts, getting familiar with different art forms such as, dance, music, theatre, and literary arts alongside visual arts.

  1. Preparation/selection requirements – portfolio, interview etc

  • Artwork count: five on the Year 1 (DSA-Sec) route, cut from ten for the 2025 cycle and unchanged for 2026, presented in person after shortlisting rather than uploaded — confirm each cycle against the Preparation Notes linked from SOTA’s DSA page. Each piece should be a strong, considered work.
  • Variety of media: Include work in at least 2-3 different media (e.g., pencil drawing, painting, mixed media) to show versatility.
  • Original work only: All pieces must be the applicant’s own work. Copies of existing artworks or heavily guided pieces are not accepted.
  • Artist statement: A brief written statement explaining your artistic interests, inspirations, and why you want to study at SOTA.
  • Physical, not digital (Year 1 DSA-Sec): Nothing is uploaded through the application portal — shortlisted applicants bring the actual artworks to the Portfolio Interview. Digital upload applies to the Year 5 IB route, not this one.

2. The SOTA Shortlisting Activity and Portfolio Interview:

2.1 AEP (Elective Art Programme) in-house

Stage 1 — Shortlisting Activity, all applicants (practical task, 30-60 minutes): Applicants may be asked to draw from observation, respond to a visual prompt, or complete a creative exercise. Materials are usually provided. The task tests how the applicant thinks and works in real time, not just the final result. No portfolio is submitted or shown at this stage

Stage 2 — Portfolio Interview, shortlisted applicants only: Students bring five original artworks and panel members ask about specific pieces — why the student chose certain subjects, what challenges they faced, and what they learned. Students who can articulate their creative process make a stronger impression

Stage 2 — Motivation and fit: Interviewers assess whether the student genuinely wants an arts-focused education and understands the commitment involved. Students who have attended SOTA open house events and can speak specifically about the school’s programmes demonstrate genuine interest

2.2 Essential Skills for SOTA Applicants:

  • Observational drawing: The ability to draw what you see accurately — proportions, values (light and shadow), and spatial relationships. This is the most fundamental skill and the one most shortlisting tasks test directly. Resources for developing this include structured drawing classes
  • Creative composition: Arranging visual elements with intention. Strong applicants demonstrate that they make deliberate choices about layout, focal point, colour harmony, and visual balance — not just filling a page
  • Media proficiency: Competence in at least 2-3 media (dry media like pencil and charcoal, wet media like watercolour or acrylic, and ideally one other such as mixed media or printmaking)
  • Art awareness: Familiarity with artists, art movements, and visual culture. SOTA wants students who are curious about art beyond their own practice. Regular gallery visits to institutions like the National Gallery Singapore, Singapore Art Museum, and Gillman Barracks exhibitions build this naturally
  • Verbal communication: The ability to talk about art — both their own work and art they admire. This is assessed during the interview and is often the area where technically skilled students fall short

SOTA is a six-year programme for students who have completed their PSLE and wish to pursue an education focusing on he arts. Starting from the age of 13, most students joining SOTA will start from year one, and graduate at year six. Students with a focus on the visual arts will gain knowledge, comprehension, and technical skills in a variety of media, forms, and expressions. In addition to gaining a solid foundation in 2D painting, students will be proficient in digital media and 3D art. They will discover how to use their creative urges for innovative results through experimentation and creativity. In addition to developing their analytical and critical skills in art practice, art theory, and art history, students will learn more about the formal, theoretical, and historical facets of the visual arts. Additionally, students will learn to explore and record their ideas, interests, reflections, and artistic processes.

4. The SOTA admission timeline for 2026

  1. January-April: Open house events and school tours at SOTA. The 2026 Open House is on Saturday, 11 April 2026, 9am–3pm — attend to understand the school culture and ask questions directly
  2. 30 March – 8 May 2026: Online application opens on the SOTA Talent Academy portal. Applicants select Visual Arts as their arts discipline and upload required documents. Preparation notes and checklist are available from 13 March 2026
  3. Saturday, 16 May 2026: All Visual Arts applicants must attend an in-person shortlisting activity at SOTA (no make-up sessions)
  4. 23–26 June 2026: Talent Academy activities for shortlisted applicants, including practical art tasks and interviews
  5. 25 August 2026: Successful applicants receive their TA outcome from SOTA (from 6pm onwards)
  6. October: Students submit school preferences through the MOE system during the School Preference Submission period after PSLE

Batik Tales

In the Batik Introduction Handkerchief Painting workshop, participants will learn the traditional art of batik, a wax-resist dyeing technique originating from Indonesia. Participants will then observe a demonstration of applying wax with tjanting tools and dyeing the fabric.   3. Colour Blast Party
    • The Colour Blast Party uses coloured cornflour powder.
    • By participating in the Colour Blast Party, participants confirm that they:
      • Do not have any known allergy or sensitivity to cornflour, corn, coloured powder, or similar materials.
      • Do not suffer from asthma, respiratory conditions, or any medical condition that may be aggravated by airborne powder.
      • Understand the nature of the activity and voluntarily choose to participate.
  4. Face & Body Painting
    • Optional face and/or body painting may be available during the event.
    • Participants choosing to receive face or body painting confirm that they have no known allergies or skin conditions that may be affected by cosmetic or body paint products. Participants with sensitive skin are advised to refrain from participating.
  5. Assumption of Risk
    • Participants acknowledge that participation in the event, including but not limited to art jamming, the Colour Blast Party, face and/or body painting, and related activities, carries inherent risks, including accidental slips, falls, minor injuries, allergic reactions, respiratory irritation, or other unforeseen incidents.
  6. Indemnity and Release
    • By participating in the event, participants agree, to the fullest extent permitted by law, to release, discharge, and indemnify Visual Arts Centre, CHIJMES, their respective officers, employees, volunteers, contractors, sponsors, partners, and representatives from any and all claims, demands, liabilities, losses, damages, costs, expenses, injuries, or actions arising out of or in connection with participation in the event, except where such claims arise directly from the negligence or wilful misconduct of the organisers.
  7. Personal Responsibility
    • Participants are responsible for their own personal belongings and should exercise reasonable care while participating. Appropriate clothing and footwear suitable for an outdoor event are recommended.
  8. Organiser's Rights
    • Visual Arts Centre and CHIJMES reserve the right to refuse participation or remove any participant whose behaviour is deemed unsafe, disruptive, or poses a risk to others. The organisers also reserve the right to modify, postpone, suspend, or cancel the event due to weather, safety concerns, or unforeseen circumstances.
