Perfect for all levels (Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced) | Suitable for non-native Japanese speakers
Principles of Japanese Shodo also called Shūji (習字) — light and expressive brushwork, thoughtful use of negative space, rhythm, simplicity and meaning.
Writing style:
Japanese Calligraphy (Shodo) emphasise more than writing neatly, is a healing art form that brings together the rhythm of brush and ink, the Zen-inspired beauty of negative space, and minimalist aesthetics. It is connected to the philosophy of Zen and mindful brushwork. The practice encourages concentration, awareness and a calm state of mind while writing.
Chinese calligraphy often emphasises strength, structure, momentum and powerful changes in brush pressure. Japanese calligraphy often feature more open, rounded and flowing forms, with fewer sharp transitions.
Writing script:
Japanese Calligraphy (Shodo) & Chinese calligraphy is written in seal script (篆書), clerical script (隷書), regular script (楷書), semi-cursive (行書) & cursive (草書)
Writing tools:
Both Japanese Calligraphy (Shodo) & Chinese calligraphy use Four Treasures of Study 文房四宝: brush (筆, fude) inkstick (墨, sumi), Mulberry paper (和紙, washi) or rice paper (宣纸), inkstone (硯, suzuri) to grind the inkstick against, mixed with water.
