HCJC 50th Anniversary Calligraphy & Painting Exhibition

Synopsis

As part of the 50th anniversary celebrations of Hwa Chong Junior College, the Chinese Calligraphy and Painting Society Alumni (Calligraphy Alumni) has organised an exhibition to raise funds for the Student Education Fund and promote Chinese art culture. The Calligraphy Alumni comprises former HJC students passionate about the art of Chinese Calligraphy. They have organized past exhibitions to raise funds for Hwa Chong Institute and the Tan Tock Seng Hospital Community Fund, and have also engaged the community by sharing Chinese New Year couplets with senior activity centres and hospitals. This group of passionate enthusiasts has engaged retired teachers, current students, and alumni to curate an exhibition, providing a platform to display the artwork of both students and alumni, further fostering cultural appreciation and artistic talents.

The session will be conducted in Mandarin.

Academy Drawing Traditions

The academy drawing and sketching tradition, rooted in centuries of artistic practice, emphasizes disciplined study of form, proportion, and technique. Originating from Renaissance workshops and formalized by institutions like the Royal Academy, it prioritizes meticulous observation and mastery of fundamental skills. Students progress from basic exercises to complex compositions, learning to depict still life and common objects with precision and expression. This tradition values both classical principles and innovation, encouraging artists to push boundaries while maintaining a deep respect for tradition. Through rigorous training and critique, artists within this tradition cultivate a strong foundation for creative exploration and artistic excellence.
