Celebrate a decade of artistic growth at Visual Arts Centre with The Art Academy: VAC Open House, a special 10th Anniversary event held at our Dhoby Ghaut Exhibition Gallery.

This Open House offers a unique insight into Visual Arts Centre’s academy-style approach to art education — showcasing how art is taught, practised, and developed across all levels. Through a curated exhibition of student and instructor works, visitors will experience the journey of learning, from foundational techniques to refined artistic expression.

Across three days, explore a vibrant lineup of art workshops and programmes designed for all ages — from young children and teens to adult hobbyists and aspiring artists. These sessions provide an opportunity to experience our classes firsthand, guided by professional instructors in a studio setting.

Whether you are looking to begin your artistic journey, build a portfolio, or simply explore a new creative interest, this Open House is the perfect starting point. Visitors can also enjoy exclusive course promotions, speak with our team about suitable programmes, and receive special goodie bags with new registrations.

1. Adam & Eve – Figure Drawing & Painting

Ages: 16 & Above
Session: Thu, 9 April | 7:30PM–10:00PM
Fee: $68 (+$10 Gouache Upgrade)

Step into the timeless story of Adam and Eve through this immersive figure drawing and painting session. Explore a dynamic mix of short poses, gestural studies, and a longer pose, observing both male and female models in draped settings.

Guided by professional VAC instructors, experiment with graphite, charcoal, coloured pencils, and crayons — or elevate your work with gouache. With live demonstrations and personalised guidance, participants are encouraged to explore expressive, confident mark-making.

Suitable for beginners and experienced artists alike who wish to deepen their understanding of life drawing.

2. Manga & Coloured Illustration

Ages: 8–14
Session: Fri 5:00–6:30PM | Sat 10:30AM–12:00PM

Designed for young artists, this engaging workshop introduces the fundamentals of manga drawing and coloured illustration. Participants will learn essential rendering techniques, understand the structure of manga creation, and practise building characters step by step.

By the end of the session, students will complete their own manga artwork with vibrant colours, guided with clear demonstrations and personalised support.

3. Introduction to Digital Art (Character Manga)

Ages: 8–16
Session: Fri 5:00–6:00PM | Sat 2:00–3:00PM / 3:00–4:00PM

Discover the world of digital art through creating your own manga-style character on iPad. This beginner-friendly workshop introduces essential tools, brushes, and techniques used in digital illustration.

Participants will learn how to sketch, line, and colour digitally, gaining confidence in using digital platforms while completing a character artwork. Perfect for those starting their digital art journey.

4. Realism in Drawing

Ages: 9 & Above
Session: Fri 5:00–6:30PM | Sat 11:00AM–12:30PM | 3:00–4:30PM

Learn how to bring your drawings to life with realism techniques. This workshop focuses on observation skills, proportions, shading, and tonal values to create depth and accuracy.

With step-by-step guidance, participants will develop stronger control in rendering form and light, building a solid foundation in realistic drawing. Suitable for beginners and those looking to refine their skills.

5. Botanical Watercolour Painting

Ages: 12 & Above (Youth & Adults)

8. Graffiti Street Art: Doodling Edition by ANTZ

About Visual Arts Centre

With 5500 square feet glass-house exhibition gallery and art studio located directly above the Dhoby Ghaut MRT and housed within the beautiful, lush green habitat of Dhoby Ghaut Green. Supported by the National Parks Board, Visual Arts Centre is Singapore’s premier arts recreational centre with rotating exhibitions, art activities and programmes free for public admission and a professional art studio offering various art courses for training and workshop.

Since its establishment in 2016, the Visual Arts Centre has been an art education institution & art establishment supported by the Singapore Government. Our professional team & artists line-ups provide & customise services with art related courses, activities, exhibitions, tours & events.

Our Dhoby Ghaut Art Studio & Exhibition Gallery, conveniently located above Dhoby Ghaut MRT and nestled within the verdant Dhoby Ghaut Green Park, is a wonderful place for individuals: kids/teens/adults to improve art skills & techniques.

    If you are driving, parking is available at nearby malls and buildings: Plaza Singapura, UBS and The Cathay, all within a short walk. Visual Arts Centre is visible when driving from both Penang and Orchard Roads. Drop-off point is at Penang Road/Orchard Road.

  • By Public Transport

    Taking the MRT, alight at Dhoby Ghaut train station, which is an interchange for all three distinct lines (i.e red, yellow, and purple lines). Visual Arts Centre is a 60 metre walk from either Exit B or Exit A of the Dhoby Ghaut MRT station, with direct lift access available from the basement Dhoby Ghaut MRT exchange (shops & eateries). Bus stops and taxi stands are available within a 100 metre radius.

Art courses are offered at both Dhoby Ghaut Art Studio and Chinatown Art Studio. Please choose the studio that best suits you.

You will receive a certificate of completion if you complete the 96 art courses or 48 private lessons and 10 one-on-one private lessons.

World of Manga [Foundation & Styling]
A manga art workshop for children and teenagers sounds like a fantastic idea! Here’s how you might structure it:
Introduction to Manga: Begin by introducing what manga is, its history, and its influence on popular culture worldwide. Show examples of different manga styles and genres to give participants an overview.
Basic Drawing Techniques: Start with the fundamentals of drawing, such as line work, shapes, and proportions. Provide step-by-step instructions on how to draw basic manga characters, focusing on simple shapes that can be built upon.
Character Design: Move on to character design concepts, including creating unique characters, designing their personalities, and developing backstories. Encourage participants to get creative and think outside the box.
Expression and Emotion: Teach how to convey emotions and expressions through facial expressions, body language, and positioning of characters. This can be a fun and interactive exercise where participants practice drawing various emotions.

Chinese Ink Painting and Calligraphy

Funk with Graffiti
Funk With Graffiti Workshop for children is an engaging and creative program aimed at introducing young artists to the vibrant world of graffiti and funk-inspired street style art. Participants learn the basics of graffiti history, techniques, and safety. Guided by professional graffiti artists, children explore the art of designing their unique tags, emphasizing creativity, expression, and individuality. The workshop includes hands-on activities, from sketching concepts to creating final designs with spray paint on provided surfaces. By the end of the session, children gain confidence in their artistic abilities and an appreciation for graffiti and funk as legitimate forms of street art. Each child completes two original artworks, which they proudly take home, showcasing their newfound skills and personal style.
Batik Tales

In the Batik Introduction Handkerchief Painting workshop, participants will learn the traditional art of batik, a wax-resist dyeing technique originating from Indonesia. The workshop begins with a brief history and overview of batik, highlighting its cultural significance and various techniques. Participants will then observe a demonstration of applying wax with tjanting tools and dyeing the fabric. Following the demonstration, each participant will design and create their own batik handkerchief, applying wax to create patterns and then dyeing their fabric. The workshop concludes with a group discussion, allowing participants to share their creations and reflect on their learning experience.
