Professional Manga Drawing & Coloured Illustration Art Course Outline
1. Core Course Fundamentals: Building a Solid Foundation in Drawing from the Ground Up 2. Progression from Traditional Manga Drawing to Digital Manga Drawing 3. Three Key Reasons Why This Professional Manga Drawing & Coloured Illustration Art Course is the Best Choice in Singapore
I.Core Course Fundamentals: Building a Solid Foundation in Drawing from the Ground Up
The main pitfall for the majority of beginner manga artists that hinders their progress is trying to learn how to draw eyes, hair, and other facial features without understanding the foundational logic of drawing. This causes them to struggle when trying to draw different angles or poses. In Visual Arts Centre, we take a completely different approach by training students in the fundamentals of drawing before they move on to stylisation and manga creation.
1. Building your Basic Foundation in Sketching
At this starting stage of the course, we systematically cover universal drawing principles such as lines, shapes, light and shadow and principles of perspective and composition. Even if you are a student with zero prior experience or knowledge, you will still be able to learn and understand variations in line weight, the relation between light and shadow and subsequently progress to inking, shading and colouring manga smoothly.
2. Detailed Introduction to Manga Style Character Proportion
The heart of creating appealing manga characters is the unique anatomy and proportion style of manga. This Professional Manga Drawing & Coloured Illustration Art Course will break down the standard manga head-to-body ratios and the difference between male and female characters’ physiques, and the 3:5 facial proportions ratio of manga faces and eyes. Teaching manga-specific facial proportions differences between chibi, shounen style and realistic anime style while refining the shape of your character’s eyebrows, eyes, mouths, and noses to form lively expressions! We also provide detailed practice in breaking down how to draw different expressions – joy, anger, sadness, happiness and more to help you avoid having characters with similar faces, also nicknamed as same-face syndrome and stiff faces in your artworks!
3. Specialised Practise of Character Movement – The Guide to Dynamic Characters
Stiff posing and awkward movement are a common struggle among beginners. We start by simplifying the structure of the human skeleton and muscles to break down common poses and actions such as running, jumping, turning, raising of arms and sitting, as well as combat scenes, exaggerated dramatic manga poses. Through quick gesture sketching exercises, you will learn to capture the dynamic energy of different movements! Learn from the start how to understand the logic behind joint movement to draw fluids, natural and expressive character poses that have strong shape langage rather than rigid base/template like poses.
You will learn hand-drawn fundamentals through comprehensive guidance in traditional mediums, such as: pencil sketching, inking with technical pens, fineliners, dot grid paper and colouring using markers and watercolour paints. Visual Arts Centre provided all art materials so you will not need to worry about purchasing materials and focus on your practice!
II.Progression from Traditional Manga Drawing to Digital Manga Drawing
The traditional hand-drawn manga pieces and compositions will be followed by digital implementation by using digital software and drawing apps to add colouring, storyboarding and special effects. Many Art Studios in Singapore focus solely on traditional art or digital art only, which can cause a disconnect between understanding the two mediums and how they complement each other. Visual Arts Centre offers an integrated 24 Session Course which comprises 12 sessions of traditional hand-drawn manga along with 12 sessions of digital manga drawing. This allows students to make a smooth transition from traditional drawing skills to digital illustrations in a structured manner, making it one of the few comprehensive dual-track courses available in Singapore!
Transitioning from Traditional to Digital Drawing: Mastering the Complete Creative Process of Manga – What is mastered before moving onto Digital Manga Drawing
By first mastering – character design, costume design, manga panel layouts, storyboarding as well as short manga scriptwriting; students will be able to independently produce short black and white hand-drawn manga strips and coloured illustrations! They will gain a thorough understanding of comic narrative logic, learn to tell stories through visuals and be capable of drawing more than just single characters on their own: to create dynamic scenes!

All Art Teachers at Visual Arts Centre are Professionals who are graduates of fine arts academies and possess a foundation in multiple mediums and realistic drawing alongside many years of experience within manga drawing style and creation.
