Join us on 4 May for a lovely evening to learn about the rich history of Batik art. Try your hand at this UNESCO recognised art form!

Batik is a traditional Indonesian art form that is practiced widely in Asia. With professional demonstration and guidance from our friendly instructor, this session is suitable for those with or even without experience in Batik art!

This workshop includes all art materials – from pencils and erasers, 1 cloth (30x30cm) handkerchief, Batik tools, dyes and other materials.

 

Conducted in the Visual Arts Centre Art Studio, Tony, from aNERD Gallery, will bring you along this journey to explore the rich history of Batik Art! We will also be showcasing some beautiful pieces of artworks done by Tony and his fellow artists. Some of them will be put up for sale – so get ready to feast your eyes while you attend the workshop!

Course Description

Taking place on 30 May 2019, from 7:30pm to 10:00pm at VAC Studio, receive professional guidance from our friendly instructor, Tony from aNERD Gallery! Suitable for anyone who is interested – with or without experience in Batik art! Receive tips and guidance to learn about this more than 1,000 year old art form. Take this opportunity to learn about this traditional art form! Bring home your masterpiece and adorn it in your house!

Programme:

7:15pm – 7:30 pm: Registration, settling down and preparation of materials

7:30pm – 10:00pm:

– Brief Introduction to Batik and its rich history

– Designing your own batik motif or pattern

– Trying out the whole batik process – wax application, dip dyeing and wav removal.

– Demonstration on how to use the tools of the trade

– Batik care 101

Through this workshop, one can look forward to learn about the techniques and intricacies on the creation of this classic art form. The session starts with a brief introduction of the history of Batik and gets you acquainted with the tools of the trade. This is followed by a hands-on activity of learning to design your own batik motif and pattern.

*This workshop is not suitable for young children. Minimum age – 12 years old and above.

All art materials for Batik art will be provided including: 1 cloth (30x30cm), Batik tools and materials, pencils and erasers. Refreshments of hot and cold water, tea bags, instant coffee and biscuits are complimentary.

World of Manga [Foundation & Styling]

A manga art workshop for children and teenagers sounds like a fantastic idea! Here’s how you might structure it:
Introduction to Manga: Begin by introducing what manga is, its history, and its influence on popular culture worldwide. Show examples of different manga styles and genres to give participants an overview.
Basic Drawing Techniques: Start with the fundamentals of drawing, such as line work, shapes, and proportions. Provide step-by-step instructions on how to draw basic manga characters, focusing on simple shapes that can be built upon.
Character Design: Move on to character design concepts, including creating unique characters, designing their personalities, and developing backstories. Encourage participants to get creative and think outside the box.
Expression and Emotion: Teach how to convey emotions and expressions through facial expressions, body language, and positioning of characters. This can be a fun and interactive exercise where participants practice drawing various emotions.

Guided by professional graffiti artists, children explore the art of designing their unique tags, emphasizing creativity, expression, and individuality. The workshop includes hands-on activities, from sketching concepts to creating final designs with spray paint on provided surfaces. By the end of the session, children gain confidence in their artistic abilities and an appreciation for graffiti and funk as legitimate forms of street art. Each child completes two original artworks, which they proudly take home, showcasing their newfound skills and personal style.

Batik Tales

In the Batik Introduction Handkerchief Painting workshop, participants will learn the traditional art of batik, a wax-resist dyeing technique originating from Indonesia. The workshop begins with a brief history and overview of batik, highlighting its cultural significance and various techniques. Participants will then observe a demonstration of applying wax with tjanting tools and dyeing the fabric. Following the demonstration, each participant will design and create their own batik handkerchief, applying wax to create patterns and then dyeing their fabric. The workshop concludes with a group discussion, allowing participants to share their creations and reflect on their learning experience.
