What is Interior Design & Freehand Rendering Sketching & Why is it Important?

Interior Design & Freehand Rendering Sketching is an art form where you sketch and render spatial concepts, furniture, and interior layouts using mediums such as graphite pencils, fineliner markers, markers, pens, and more! This is a key foundational skill for aspiring interior designers and architects, as it is a good way to develop spatial awareness, perspective, and form! Students will get to understand light, shadow, and material rendering through references of increasing difficulty, progressing to live observation and freehand conceptual sketching too! Most design portfolios to apply for DSA (Direct School Admission) to Secondary Schools, SOTA, Polytechnics (Interior Design/Architecture courses), and even overseas design school applications will require strong Freehand Rendering pieces, so it is an art course extremely popular among teenagers who wish to explore interior design, architecture, or spatial design as a future career path!

Subjects You Can Sketch & Render in this Professional Interior Design & Freehand Rendering Art Course:

  • Perspective drawing (One-point, two-point, and three-point perspective)
  • Furniture and object rendering
  • Interior space layouts and floor plans
  • Material and texture rendering (wood, fabric, metal, glass)
  • Lighting and shadow rendering in interior spaces
  • Architectural elements (windows, doors, staircases)
  • Conceptual space planning
  • Live observational sketching of interior environments

Our student learning interior design and freehand rendering in our interior design Art Course | Art Class | Art Lesson in Singapore

Progression of Subjects:

  1. We start off with basic perspective drawing, where you begin with one-point perspective before progressing to two-point and three-point perspective with increasing compositional difficulty
  2. After you’ve learnt how to construct accurate perspective, we will progress to furniture and object rendering, where you will learn to sketch individual pieces with correct proportion, form, and material qualities
  3. From here, we progress to more difficult subjects, such as interior space layouts and floor plans, where you will train in translating spatial concepts into clear, readable sketches
  4. With an understanding of spatial layouts, we will progress you to full interior scene rendering, combining furniture, architectural elements, and spatial composition in a single piece
  5. Alongside this, you will also move on to material and texture rendering, which combines your previous learning of perspective and object rendering to convincingly depict wood, fabric, metal, and glass
  6. You can then move on to lighting and shadow rendering, where you will further understand how light interacts with interior spaces to bring depth and atmosphere to your sketches

Progression in this step-by-step way will help develop a strong foundation to help you understand perspective, spatial composition, material rendering, and light and shadow. This can help you in future conceptual and original design pieces, which can help support your design portfolio if you wish to apply to interior design, architecture, or art schools.
