What is Drawing & Sketching & Why is it Important?

Drawing & Sketching is an art form where you draw and sketch using mediums such as graphite pencils, fineliner markers, charcoal, pens, and more! This is a key foundational skill all artists are encouraged to learn, as it is a good way to develop shape and form! Students will get to understand light and shadow through replication references of increasing difficulty, progressing to live observation sketching too! Most art portfolios to apply for DSA (Direct School Admission) to Secondary Schools and SOTA will require Drawing & Sketching pieces, so it is an art course extremely popular among teenagers who wish to further develop their art skills seriously!

  • Draping clothes
  • Plaster casts
  • Portraits

Best Kids/Children/Preteen Professional Drawing & Sketching Art Course in Singapore by Visual Arts Centre Professional 3 Medium 3 Immersion Art Course

A student working on a classical plaster cast drawing in our Teenager Art Course (Ages 13–17).

Progression of Subjects:

  1. We start off with still-life, where we begin with one object and slowly progress in difficulty through more objects and varying compositions
  2. After your teenager has learnt how to draw still-life from references well enough, we will progress to observational drawing where your child will learn to draw from subjects in real life to train their artistic eye, proportion, and tonal understanding even further
  3. From here, we can progress to more difficult subjects, such as an introduction to facial anatomy, where we will train your teenager in drawing different facial features such as eyes, mouth, nose, hair and more
  4. With an understanding of facial features, we will be able to progress your teenager to drawing full portraits
  5. Along with this, they will also be able to move on to plaster cast portrait drawing, which combines their previous learning of observational drawing and portrait drawing
  6. They can then move on to anatomy and figure drawing, where they will further understand human muscles and proportion

Progression in this step-by-step way will help develop a strong foundation to help them understand light, shadow, shape and form, and tonal values. This can help them in future creative and original pieces, which can help support their art portfolios if they wish to apply to art schools.
