TEENS march holiday art class art course Visual Arts Centre Singapore introduction to batik painting

What is Batik Painting?

You do not use pen and paper for batik. Instead, you use cloth instead of paper, and wax instead of ink. When beginning a piece of batik work, you would draw a sketch using pencils of the design desired. Then, you would use a wax funnel – a tjanting, filled with hot melted wax, to trace over the patterns on the cloth. This type of batik painting art is known as batik tulis – which means writing, completely using wax by hand with the tjanting tool. From this batik tjanting method, you can see the changes in the variation in size and shapes of the wax flowing.

What can you expect?

  1. Materials knowledge, brief history of Batik Painting
