Calling all nature lovers, regardless of your level of art experience, beginner or advanced, come learn how to illustrate life around you!
Join us as we bring to you to you a fascinating night of learning how to illustrate botanical life! Taking place at Lyf@SMU, this workshop organised by Visual Arts Centre is aimed for beginners to pick up on illustrating botanical life, as one of the common living subject found around us. This workshop will also teach participants methods of looking into various subject matters, from still life into living things.
What can I expect?
This course will teach you the important skills of illustration from life references and from your imagination. Our artist will guide you on how to on the intricacies of illustration and guide you on creating your own style of illustration.
Participants will learn how to turn images in your head into an artwork. Learn and understand the basics of illustration and design with an emphasis on botanical illustration. You will not only be exposed to different illustration and illustrator’s styles, you will also learn how to create your own botanical illustrations from start to finish.
This workshop strives to cater to every participant’s level of proficiency and artistic style, to allow you to develop your own path as an illustrator.
At the end of the session, stay tune to have an interesting QnA session with the artists herself and find out more about what inspires her art and illustrations!
Who is this workshop suitable for?
If you are a nature lover, or like to doodle, sign up for this class! This workshop is suitable for everyone! For anyone beginning to illustrate, this course will be your ideal starting point. Individuals who are keen to learn how to develop your illustration style can also come down for this session.

Cindy a.k.a. Sicksickkids, is our resident artist who ventures into illustrative expressions of respite and despondency between living things. She mostly works on commissions and temporary public displays, Sicksickkids could often be found working with fellow creatives. She has notably worked with musical bands Subsonic Eye (SG), The saddest Landscape (US), and Falls (JP), and collectives or creators such as Band of Doodlers (SG), Project XIV (SG), and DLWGO (US).

7.20pm – 7.30pm | Registration and settling down
7.30pm to 7.45pm | Introduction to Illustration art and works by the artist herself (You will be exposed to the various styles of illustration, popular media, works by notable artists)
7.45pm to 8.15pm | Familiarising yourself with the tools of the trade
Types of paper, pens and brushes. Try your hand at testing out illustration on different paper textures – grains and thickness, using different pens and brushes (Brush strokes, pens and ballpoint)
8.15pm to 9pm | Demonstration of how to draw plants from observing the still life objects. Illustrating basic still life objects and observing the shapes, form and proportions. You will learn how to draw plants in an illustrative style while observing the parts of plants.
- Learning the different types of familiar flowering plants
- Drawing the various parts of a plant
9pm to 9.45pm | Picking out subject matter, sketching out various angles and configuration. Learning how to create your own collage – composing a layout for a collage. You will learn how to ink and shade the works.
9.45pm to 10pm | Quick debrief and sharing session. Ask the artist about her works and her style!

About the artist:
Sicksickkids is a one-girl venture by Cindy Witono, into illustrative expressions of respite and despondency between living things. Her subject matters are often juxtapositions of men against nature, in a playful and organic illustrative spin.
Mostly working on commissions and temporary public displays, Sicksickkids could often be found working with fellow creatives. She has notably worked with musical bands Subsonic Eye (SG), The Saddest Landscape (US), and Falls (JP), and collectives or creators such as Band of Doodlers (SG), Project XIV (SG), and DLWGO (US).
